Shopping for sarees in Connaught Place: a 79-year-old shop’s guide

Connaught Place has sold cloth for as long as it has stood. Among the colonnades and the showrooms, there are still a few counters run by families who have measured saree borders here for generations. Ours is one of them. Here is how to shop the circle well, from people who have done it since 1979.

Finding the Regal Building

Textile House sits at 14A Regal Building, on the outer ring of Connaught Place, a short walk from Rajiv Chowk Metro station on the Blue and Yellow lines. Come up into the colonnade, look for the board, and you are at the same corner four generations of our family have worked. If you reach the old Regal cinema site, you are right beside us.

What to expect at the counter

A good Connaught Place saree shop is not a self-service rack. You tell us the occasion, the budget and the fabric you have in mind, and we bring bolts and folded pieces to the counter for you to feel. Touch everything. Hold it to the light. Ask what it costs to keep alive, not just to buy. A fair shop will tell you plainly which saree wants dry cleaning and which survives a bucket wash.

Our range runs from about ₹750 to ₹5,000, which is where a working family’s saree has always sat. We do not deal in hype words, and we never have.

When to come

We are open every day, 10:30 am to 7:30 pm. Mornings are the calm hours; the circle fills up after four in the afternoon, and festive weeks are busy from lunchtime on. If you want unhurried time at the counter, come before noon on a weekday.
